On Tuesday the 23rd of June various partners of the Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe network held a deep dive session on China’s growing influence on the maritime industry.  The session was organised by Netherlands Maritime Technology, Nederland Maritiem Land, the municipality of Rotterdam and the Clingendael Institute.

During the session Vice Mayor Barbara Kathmann, of the municipality of Rotterdam, and various CEO’s from the maritime industry, the Rotterdam Maritime Board, and relevant trade associations discussed the necessity for an industrial strategy for the Dutch maritime cluster and which steps should be taken to maintain and strengthen its position and competitive edge.

All participants confirmed the importance and need for a maritime ‘China Strategy’ that is aligned with initiatives on European level. In addition all parties agreed that the strategy should be based on the unique strengths that the Dutch maritime industry is build on. Globally the sector is known for being complete and creating competitive advantage through its commercial spirit, innovative power and organisational excellence.

A smaller group of industry experts will work on the development of the industrial strategy, to be utilised by the maritime industry to take advantage of its innovative strengths to the fullest.
