YoungShip Rotterdam has announced the inclusion of the Shipcon Shipathon, a hybrid experiential element for Shipcon 2021, a conference shaped by young maritime professionals, for young maritime professionals.

In combination with the events main themed tracks, Shipcon 2021 (Oct 19 – Nov 5) will feature a “hackathon” styled hybrid experiential element, called the Shipcon Shipathon, where teams will compete to pitch the best solution to one of three sustainability challenges.

Hackathon

Hacking is about using creativity to solve the challenges we face today – it doesn’t have to be focused on programming or technology. That said, Shipcon 2021 will leverage technology around each of the three interactive experiences allowing participants from across the globe to participate in a first for the event.

The Shipathon will see 25 teams of 5 individuals come together via an online gaming environment to compete in three event engagements, all while they work to solve one of three sustainability challenges.

The sustainability challenges will broadly cover sustainable ports, sustainable shipbuilding, and financing sustainable ships. Clues that will help teams solve the three interactive experiences will be provided throughout the conference tracks that will be running in parallel to the experiential element.

Shipcon

Shipcon 2021 is the maritime industries only event shaped by young maritime professionals, for young maritime professionals. Conceived by YoungShip International in 2015, it has grown year-on-year. Each year, a different chapter of YoungShip is awarded the privilege of hosting Shipcon with Rotterdam receiving the privilege in 2020.

While the event has been shaped to appeal to young maritime professionals, the learning and engagement elements are equally interesting for those looking to understand the mindsets of the future of the maritime industry and where it is headed and older individuals as well as those who are young at heart are encouraged to participate.

Shipcon 2021 will be held with both digital elements as well as in-person elements where possible given local Covid-19 related restrictions at the time of the event.

YoungShip Rotterdam, The Netherlands based chapter of YoungShip International, provides networking, learning, and community engagement opportunities for young maritime professionals in the Rotterdam area. Founded in 2004 in Norway, YoungShip International has grown steadily over the past 16 years with over 3,000 global members.
