Learn more about the energy en industry cluster of Rotterdam.
Rotterdam has great potential in the field of hydrogen, due to its favourable location as a deep sea port, the presence of large-scale (petro-)chemical industry, the wind energy connection from the North Sea and the infrastructure as part of the corridor of liquid and gaseous energy carriers for Northwest Europe. The business community in the Rotterdam port and region is the driving force behind the development of the hydrogen economy in Zuid-Holland. The Municipality of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the province of Zuid-Holland, Stedin, InnovationQuarter and Economic Board Zuid-Holland are working closely together to facilitate this. The regional innovation ecosystem, with its academic and applied sciences universities and field labs, completes the triple helix.
This allows the city to make a fundamental contribution to the Dutch ambitions for energy transition; Rotterdam's industry alone can realise 20 to 25% of the Netherland's CO2 reduction targets. In addition, the development of a new sustainable industry and logistics sector offers opportunities for recovery from the corona crisis and a sustainable earning capacity in the long term.
The development of Rotterdam as a hydrogen hub ties in well with the commitments made in the Rotterdam Climate Agreement.
