Province of Zuid-Holland opts in for clean waterbus connections in the Rotterdam region
The joint venture will take over the concession in January 2022. At the same time a new fleet of (zero-emission) ferries will be commissioned. From then on the only substantial public transportation system by water in the Netherlands will see various improvements and be a lot greener.
Travel by regional waterways in the maritime capital of Europe
Apart from improving sustainability of public transportation by regional waterways in Zuid-Holland, the system will also see an upgrade in connections. Passengers will be able to sail from Rotterdam to Kinderdijk all year round. Commuters traveling between Zwijndrecht and Papendrecht will no longer need to transfer in Dordrecht as the two cities will have a direct connection. Other improvements include adding the Rivium business park to the transportation network. A valuable extension to the already superb public transportation system of Rotterdam and the connected business regions.
Zero emission ferries in the Drecht Cities
The concession will largely be exploited by a new fleet. Partially consisting of fully electric ‘zero-emission’ ferries that will be utilised between the Drecht Cities. Regional minister of the Province of Zuid-Holland Jeannette Baljeu: “This is a welcome addition to sustainability. Because the ships add to improving air quality they also contribute to the health of people living in the region.” The concession was granted for eight years. If the company manages to sail fully emission free by the end of the contract, there is an option to extend for another seven years.
