Shore power: feasibility study with support of the City of Rotterdam
About shore power
Shore power is a technology that allows ships to shift to electricity whilst being docked. Therefore, these ships can shift of their diesel generators. This leads to a reduction in the emission of nitrogen and CO2, which in turn leads to a decrease in noise pollution and a better air quality in the surrounding areas.
Advantages of shore power
- Environment friendly: by embracing shore power, your company contributes to a cleaner air and reduces its impact on the local environment
- Shore power is one of the few technologies that is available right now to make shipping more sustainable
- Shore power reduces noise pollution
- For some types of ships, usage of shore power will become obligatory from 2030 onwards
Feasibility study with 80% financing
The City of Rotterdam supports its port in becoming more sustainable. Maritime companies in the Port of Rotterdam are supported to research the possibility of implementing shore power, executed by either of three selected consultancy firms. The City of Rotterdam finances 80% of the costs of this study, up to a maximum of € 20.000 per study.
The study includes:
- An inventory on the demand for electricity by mooring ships
- The base for a technical design of a shore power installation
- An inventory of electric connections and possible coupling with individual generating of electricity
- An inventory of possible coupling with loading infrastructure of vehicles or mobile tools
- A business case including unprofitable top
- Emission saving estimation
- Indication for subsidizing possibilities
This subsidy program is launched on November 1, 2023, and will run for a maximum of 4 years. Read all about it here.
