The Leading Maritime Capitals 2019: Rotterdam climbs to #3

Rotterdam is known as the ‘gateway to Europe’. Our port, the busiest in Europe and the smartest in the world, is the engine powering Europe’s most innovative maritime and offshore cluster. The fact that Rotterdam is a strong maritime metropole providing in key components that maritime businesses need to thrive, is also confirmed by The Leading Maritime Capitals report 2019.

Rotterdam is showing big improvement

The five pillars of the study are the same as in the last edition of the report: Shipping, Maritime Finance and Law, Ports and Logistics, Maritime Technology, and Competitiveness and Attractiveness. According to the report, Rotterdam and Hong Kong are showing the biggest improvement. Rotterdam has moved up three places which resulted in a third place in the ranking of Maritime Capitals of the World. Rotterdam has improved its score across all pillars, with the biggest positive change in the Shipping Centers pillar, with an increase in the size of its controlled as well as managed fleet. The fleet controlled by owners based in Rotterdam has increased by 50%, whilst the fleet size that is managed from there has grown by close to 60%. Rotterdam has moved up in the Maritime Finance
and Law pillar, largely due to a 50% increase in loan value from 2017.
