2nd World Hydrogen Summit - 9th to 11th March 2021 - Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe

From 9th to 11th March 2021, the 2nd edition of the World Hydrogen Summit will take place, this year online. The 3-day international conference will focus on global trends in hydrogen and the related technological applications. The Sustainable Energy Council is organising this conference in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Municipality of Rotterdam.

Rotterdam wants to develop the Port Industrial Complex (HIC) and the related area into the largest sustainable hydrogen hub in Europe: the Hydrogen Gateway to Europe. making Rotterdam an international hub for hydrogen production, import, application and transport to other countries.

The Port Industrial Complex offers the ideal conditions for promising hydrogen initiatives to be developed into large-scale applications.

Mayor Aboutaleb of the Municipality of Rotterdam is hosting the Summit on behalf of the Municipality of Rotterdam and will be the opening speaker. Arno Bonte, Vice Mayor of Energy Transition for the Municipality of Rotterdam, will also give a keynote speech during the Summit about the regional ambitions for hydrogen.

Rotterdam has great potential in the field of hydrogen, due to its favourable location as a deep sea port, the presence of large-scale (petro-)chemical industry, the wind energy connection from the North Sea and the infrastructure as part of the corridor of liquid and gaseous energy carriers for Northwest Europe. The business community in the Rotterdam port and region is the driving force behind the development of the hydrogen economy in Zuid-Holland. The Municipality of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the province of Zuid-Holland, Stedin, InnovationQuarter and Economic Board Zuid-Holland are working closely together to facilitate this. The regional innovation ecosystem, with its academic and applied sciences universities and field labs, completes the triple helix.

This allows the city to make a fundamental contribution to the Dutch ambitions for energy transition; Rotterdam's industry alone can realise 20 to 25% of the Netherland's CO₂ reduction targets. In addition, the development of a new sustainable industry and logistics sector offers opportunities for recovery from the corona crisis and a sustainable earning capacity in the long term.

The development of Rotterdam as a hydrogen hub ties in well with the commitments made in the Rotterdam Climate Agreement.
